Stay Contemporary With Your Lighting Design Without Being Trendy

July 19, 2017 5

When it comes to lighting design it can be tempting to follow the latest trends. Everywhere you see “What’s Hot!” or “This year’s colours and styles” but sometimes that can come from media sensationalism. While staying current and trendy is important to some people, we often find people want something more tried and true that won’t appear dated in a few years.

Most of the interior designers we work with focus on finding what’s right for the homeowner — products that will have lasting appeal and appear timeless. If you’re looking to renovate or build your home, you can still create the timeless look, while still having a contemporary flair.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

The Scandinavian Look

The Brynne Pendant comes in matte black or flat white. It features innovative LED technology by Feiss in a minimalist silhouette. And with two sets of fitters in chrome and burnished brass, you can customize your metals to your desired look.

Lee Kram, the ALA (American Lighting Association) Lighting Specialist at Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre in Calgary, says “The Brynne is one of my favourites for the kitchen or dining room, because of the two finishes. Feiss recognizes the need to offer homeowners choices of different metal fixtures against the black or white neutral finish.”

It is about creating layers, says Kram. “These details add interest and depth and set one home off from another.” The Brynne also, she says, can be used in a wide variety of room styles. “It bridges the industrial look, but is sleek enough to work with Scandinavian and modern styles.”

Available in two sizes, you can also cluster Brynne pendants together with the Feiss multiport canopy.

The Updated Retro Look

The Waveform Pendant by Feiss has a retro vibe that still feels contemporary. The vacuum-plated metal detailing of this one conceals the bulb for a classic, finished look.

The polished nickel finish of the Waveform is coupled with silver vacuum-plated glass; and the dual painted aged brass and dark weathered zinc version is finished with gold vacuum-plated glass. This subtle mixing of colours and metals creates an intriguing look that doesn’t jump out at you.

Geometric Drama

The Nico Pendant features a well-proportioned geometric pattern of clean lines that transition into curves. The perfect point is achieved with hand-welding craftsmanship. There is drama in the scale of these pendants, and variety in the options. Available in copper, burnished brass and chrome finishes. The chain and canopy are customized to match the fixture finish.

These can be installed in clusters, with high-impact Edison bulbs for more depth and interest.
