Striking that perfect balance between two interior design styles can prove challenging but when done correctly, can result in a home that is dynamic and interesting. Once taboo, merging two opposite looks such as traditional and modern or rustic and contemporary has risen in popularity in the design industry as it brings an eclectic ambiance to the home and creates visual interest. Creating harmony between rustic and contemporary was what Becky Runacres of My House Design Build. was looking to achieve in her most recently completed project, suitably named “Rustic Refined”. We had an opportunity to take a look at this stunning home and learn a bit more about how she successfully blended these two styles.
In this renovation the husband wanted rustic elements with ample texture while the wife requested a clean-lined, contemporary look that maintained a warm and inviting ambiance. Becky was challenged with finding the right lighting and plumbing products that complemented each other while adhering to a “Rustic Refined” look. Fortunately, she provided us with tips for those who are hoping to recreate this impressive style in their own home.
Tip #1: As a focal point in the kitchen, look for lights that seamlessly blend both looks to showcase the overall design style. Installed over the kitchen island, the Elk Lighting pendants reflect rustic elegance and modern simplicity. The oil-rubbed bronze finish provides antique texture while the glass enclosure speaks to the simple, clean lines of a contemporary look. This makes them a versatile choice and perfectly suited to a kitchen with modern aspects.
Tip #2: For a hint of contemporary, choose understated plumbing fixtures that feature smooth lines and a polished finish to balance out the texture of rustic pieces. With the warmth and texture of the light fixtures, wire-brushed oak flooring and fir-wrapped beams, sleek plumbing fixtures were the finishing touch on this kitchen to introduce contemporary flair, bringing the home’s aesthetic into the modern day.
Tip #3: Evenly distribute the varying pieces of each style throughout the space. To ensure the space doesn’t look unbalanced and the combination flows seamlessly, it is important to strategically disperse each style. In “Rustic Refined”, the industrial pendants take centre stage while the brushed nickel faucet and stainless steel sink work well with the stainless steel appliances and brushed nickel cabinet pulls.
By catering to the unique style of both homeowners, My House Design Build. produced a space that captures their individual tastes yet created a home that is stunningly cohesive.
